What other symptoms might occur with penis pain?

Penis pain may accompany other symptoms, which can vary depending on the underlying disease, disorder or condition. Pain may originate in the penis itself or may occur due to conditions in nearby areas, such as the abdomen, bladder, testicles or prostate gland.

Additional symptoms that may occur along with penis pain include:

  • Bleeding during ejaculation

  • Bruising

  • Discharge from the urethra

  • Edema (swelling)

  • Emotional problems

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED, difficulty in having or keeping an erection)

  • Hard lumps and growths

  • Inflammation

  • Itching

  • Premature ejaculation (orgasm occurs too quickly)

  • Rash, sores or lesions

  • Smegma (thick secretion that builds up under the foreskin)

  • Urinary problems, such as burning with urination and bloody urine

Serious symptoms that might indicate life-threatening condition

Seek prompt medical care if you experience penis pain, which is often caused by a serious disease or condition that requires medical attention, such as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or prostatitis. Seek immediate medical care (call 911) if you, or someone you are with, have any of these conditions or symptoms:

  • Enlargement or swelling of the head of the penis with a tight, constricting band of tissue below the head

  • Erection that is painful or lasts more than four hours

  • Foreign body in the penis

  • Inability to urinate

  • Penis or testicle trauma or injury

  • “Pop” or cracking sound from the penis during an erection

  • Testicular pain or trauma
