What are the signs of female sexual problems?

Female sexual symptoms are related to any of the organs in the female reproductive system. Depending on the cause, female sexual symptoms may be constant or they may be sporadic. They may improve or they may worsen over time. Symptoms caused by injury often have a sudden onset, such as those following sexual abuse or trauma. Other symptoms may develop slowly, such those related to infectious disease or cancers.

Female sexual symptoms may include pain that is described as stabbing, burning or itchy and that ranges in intensity from mild to severe. Pain and discomfort in the vulva (vulvodynia) is one common female sexual symptom. Others symptoms include skin irritation from rashes or household chemicals.

Problems or pain with sexual intercourse is another common symptom. Sexual intercourse may be painful, may cause bleeding, or may be difficult due to dysfunction. Sometimes perceived female sexual symptoms are actually psychological symptoms following sexual abuse, rape, or trauma.

One cause of female sexual symptoms can be infection of the organs of the reproductive system, including the external genitalia, clitoris, vagina, uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes. Cancers may also result in female sexual symptoms and symptoms in other regions of the body.

In some cases, female sexual symptoms may occur with other symptoms that might indicate a serous condition that should be evaluated. Seek prompt medical care if you, or someone you are with, have female sexual symptoms along with other serous symptoms, including abnormal vaginal bleeding, lesions on the genitalia, missed menstrual periods, or abnormal vaginal discharge.

If your female sexual symptoms are persistent or cause you concern, seek prompt medical care.
