Ocular symptoms that may occur along with eyelid pain

Eyelid pain may accompany other symptoms affecting the ocular system including:

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Itchy eyes
  • Red, sore eyes (bloodshot eyes)
  • Redness, warmth or swelling of the eyelids
  • Watery eyes

Other symptoms that may occur along with eyelid pain

Eyelid pain may accompany symptoms related to other body systems including:

  • Fever
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose (nasal congestion)
  • Sore throat

Serious symptoms that might indicate a life-threatening condition

In some cases, eyelid pain can be a symptom of a serious, even life-threatening infection called orbital cellulitis. Seek immediate medical care (call 911) if you, or someone you are with, have any of the following symptoms:

  • Bulging eyes
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Eye pain, especially when moving the eyes
  • High fever (higher than 101 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Loss of vision or changes in vision
  • Swollen red or purple eyelids

What causes eyelid pain?

Eyelid pain is caused by an inflammation of the eyelids that cover and protect the eye. Pain in the eyelids usually originates in the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye, or in the oil glands and hair follicles at the base of the eyelashes. Allergies, infections, reactions to cosmetics and personal care products, and environmental factors such as smoke or smog are common causes of eyelid pain.
