Symptoms that may occur along with blue lips

Blue lips may accompany other symptoms caused by underlying conditions or due to events that lead to a lack of oxygen in the blood including:

  • Bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes
  • Fainting or change in level of consciousness or lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid breathing (tachypnea) or shortness of breath
  • Thickening of the tissues beneath the nails (clubbing)

Serious symptoms that might indicate a life-threatening condition

In some cases, blue lips may be a symptom of a life-threatening condition that should be immediately evaluated in an emergency setting. Seek immediate medical care (call 911) if you, or someone you are with, have any of these life-threatening symptoms including:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fainting or change in level of consciousness or lethargy
